Record Plant, New York Studio Recording 1) “Stone Free” Instrumental takes with Billy, Jimi & Mitch In the early morning hours, Hendrix, Mitchell, and Cox recorded a number at attempts of a remake of “Stone Free”. No final masters were achieved however. After flying to the Island of Maui for a special filmed project by Manager, Michael Jeffrey, Hendrix, Cox, and Mitchell perform for an invitiation-only crowd of 500 people for the Rainbow Bridge Vibratory Color Sound Experiment on the Haleakala Crater on the Island of Maui. Portions of the performance are included on the posthumously released motion picture Rainbow Bridge. Although the entire performance has yet to be officially released, Hendrix’s two sets atop the Haleakala Creater included: (First set) “Spanish Castle Magic,” “Lover Man,” “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun),” “In From The Storm,” “Message To Love,” “Foxey Lady,” “Hear My Train A Comin’,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Fire,” and “Purple Haze.” (Second set) “Dolly Dagger,” “Instrumental,” “Ezy Rider,” “Red House,” “Freedom,” “Beginnings,” “Straight Ahead,” “Hey Baby (New Rising Sun),” “Stone Free,” and “Hey Joe.” Jimi Hendrix is photographed during The Experience’s July 30, 1970 performance atop the Haleakala Crater on the Island of Maui in Hawaii.
