The Hendrix family companies, Experience Hendrix and Authentic Hendrix are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of D.A. Pennebaker, the creative and innovative documentary filmmaker who pioneered a new style of music film production. From his debut shortfilm DAYBREAK EXPRESS (1953), to the hit Bob Dylan film, DON’T LOOK BACK (1967) or to his introspective David Bowie film ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS (1973), his films were both critically acclaimed and universally celebrated by music fans.

Pennebaker also made possible the monumental recordings, preservation and release of footage that was captured at the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival that resulted in the release of the Jimi Hendrix associated films MONTEREY POP (1968) and JIMI PLAYS MONTEREY (1986). This original archival footage was remastered and featured in the film AMERICAN LANDING: THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE LIVE AT MONTEREY POP (2007).

Long supportive of Jimi Hendrix’s legacy, D.A. Pennebaker will always be celebrated for his groundbreaking films, but also fondly remembered for his friendship and support over the past 50 years. Fly on sweet angel.
